Tour Description
Oxford is a city of writers. This may sound like a cliche but it is. It really is. And you want to delve into it. Whether you loved J.R.R. Tolkien’s books (or indeed the films) in your youth, were transfixed by C.S. Lewis’s religious writing, or have ever wondered why writers as diverse as Oscar Wilde, T.S. Eliot, and Monica Ali have a common interest in this city, you should put down your novel and spend a few hours on the streets of Oxford.
Your Context expert (an Oxford University graduate and/or expert in its history) will help unpack the story behind the city’s literary history in a tantalizing tale. Its chapters might include Chaucer, Shakespeare, Philip Pullman, or R.F. Kuang - it all depends on your interests - but it will be a memorable story.
Alongside the history, your tour will include some elements of the modern literary city. You may pass through the Bodleian Library - one of the world’s most renowned - or pop into Blackwell’s Bookshop - a local institution with its huge and well known Norrington Room. If you give us prior notice, we may even be able to arrange a private tour of the university publishing house, Oxford University Press.
Your expert and you will help craft a properly personalised literary tour of this remarkable writerly city leaving you in no doubt as to why the cliche is more fact than fiction.

Experts
A city of writers
“The two great turning points in my life, were when my father sent me to Oxford, and when society sent me to prison.” - Oscar Wilde
You will meet your expert in Oxford’s city center. They will spend a few minutes getting a sense of your specific interests before embarking on your literary adventure around the city.
They will start off by pointing out some of the city’s most important literary landmarks - the imposing bastion of bibliophilia which is the Bodleian Library, and its consumerist cousin, Blackwell’s Bookshop. If time and your interests allow, they may well take you into one or both of these great institutions.
After that, your expert will make sure to show you where C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien and the other “Inklings” debated, discussed, and drank at the Eagle and Child pub on St Giles. They will explain how this club and its members fit into the university.
You will be taken to see several college exteriors and (opening times permitting) some interiors too so that you can understand why living in these grand buildings helped inspire some of the world’s most famous writers.
At the end of your Oxford literary tour, you will hopefully feel that you understand its writerly culture on a profound level. You will have seen how it worked in the past and continues to operate in the present and your Expert will have done their best to tailor the tour to your particular interests.
(If you contact us in advance we may also be able to arrange a private tour of Oxford University Press, the university’s in-house publishing house. Subject to availability)
- The Eagle and Child Pub - (currently under renovation) where C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien exchanged ideas, read first drafts and had fun as part of the Inklings Club
- The Bodleian Library - one of two copyright libraries in the UK (meaning they hold a copy of every book published) and one of the world’s most significant libraries
- An Oxford college - almost every college in Oxford has a literary connection. Your Expert will take you into one (variable depending on opening restrictions and your interests)
