About Michael

Michael Gakuran is an adventurer, consultant, and storyteller with over 16 years of experience uncovering the hidden and unseen from all 47 corners of Japan. Holding a First-Class BA in Japanese and Philosophy with Distinction in Spoken Japanese from the University of Leeds, and winner of the UK National Japanese Speech Contest, Michael specializes in Japanese language and culture, bridging the gap between visitors and locals to create unique, immersive experiences.

Michael has worked extensively as a fixer and producer for international media, a designer and guide for bespoke luxury travel, and an interpreter for corporate and government delegations. Known for his work on Discovery Channel's Forgotten Planet and Netflix's Dark Tourist, he has consulted for scientists, NPOs, and documentary filmmakers, leading expeditions to restricted areas such as the Fukushima Nuclear Exclusion Zone and Gunkanjima (Battleship Island). His writings have appeared in The Japan Times and Gaijinpot, covering topics from ruins exploration (haikyo) to cultural storytelling and language acquisition.

With deep knowledge of Japan’s subcultures, offbeat locations, and love of urban exploration, Michael crafts bespoke experiences that go beyond the ordinary - leading you on a journey that blends adventure, culture, and the thrill of discovery.
