Audio Guide Description
  • Dive into the origins of National Socialism with expert Achim Wigand, from Marienplatz to Königsplatz.
  • Learn how the darkest chapters of German history have shaped society today, including resistance, hyperinflation, and ideology.
  • Walk through significant sites like Maxvorstadt and the Old Botanical Garden, gaining insights into the rise of a failing artist to a dictator.
Munich was not merely another city during the Nazi regime; it was the birthplace of National Socialism, officially dubbed the "Capital of the Movement" and honored with the title "Führerstadt." Join historian, writer, and Context Travel expert Achim Wigand on a walking tour to explore this history.

The audio tour begins at Marienplatz, the central square of Munich's old town. You'll walk through the city center, visiting key sites like the Feldherrnhalle monument and Platz der Opfer des Nationalsozialismus, a tribute to the victims of National Socialism.

As you proceed to Königsplatz, Achim will explain how a sophisticated and educated nation succumbed to the influence of racist ideologues. Your path will take you through Maxvorstadt, once a hub for arts, education, and culture, now known as the Parteiviertel with the densest concentration of Nazi architecture in Germany. The audio tour concludes at the Old Botanical Garden by the Neptunbrunnen.

On this two-hour audio tour, you will:
  • Explore the role of beer in Bavarian political discussions at Tal 38.
  • Delve into the chaotic times of hyperinflation in 1923.
  • Gain insights into how Germany has confronted its darkest historical chapter, focusing on those who resisted.
  • Learn about the Holocaust and its roots in National Socialist ideology.
  • Understand the early 20th-century advancements in air warfare and its destructive capabilities.
  • Discover how a fringe political party and an unsuccessful artist named Adolf Hitler gained power in a war-torn Germany.
This audio tour will leave you with a profound understanding of the factors leading to Germany's moral collapse under the Nazis and the lessons learned from this grim period.
